Model for Self-Sustaining Villages
-
A benevolent organization, such as CPI, purchases the land on which the village will be built.
-
Mortgages are extended to landless families that have been selected to participate in building the village. Each mortgage is held jointly by husband and wife.
-
The land is subdivided into a communal lot and individual lots.
-
The participants cooperate in constructing their homes.
-
The participants form a cooperative which provides the economic structure for generating income.
-
The participants grow crops individually for their own use and communally for the cooperative to sell on the open market.
-
Income from the cooperative enables the participants to pay off the mortgages on their houses and land.
-
The repaid mortgages are used by the organization to finance the building of a new village.
